ABOUT 'SPIRITUALISED'
I see spiritualisation as the process of interpretation of the landscape through the abstract process of simplification and embellishment.
For several years now, I have conceptualised my process and composition as order from chaos and therefore symbolic of creation itself. ‘Creations about creation’, I then saw as a recursive and fractal idea. This year I have been considering the symbolic and philosophical idea of creation.
That which the artist selects for emphasis is the process of adding meaning to the material. Each painting symbolises the sky above as spiritual (immaterial ideas, visions, potential, thoughts). The spiritual is represented as light above. Below is the material, represented as darkness. Creation is then symbolically the meeting of spiritual and material (the meeting of a vision with paint). This suggests that the creation can be manifest through the materialisation of a vision/idea or, slightly more difficult to conceive, manifest through spiritualisation of the material. This second conception represents the abstract interpretation of the material landscape (adding spirit to the material).
The symbolic references in the paintings are:
Spiritual light casting down on the material creating colour.
Darkness of the material being raised with spiritual meaning, creating colour.
