ABOUT 'GAIA'
As always in my paintings, I like the process to symbolise the concept.
To symbolise the manifestation of positivity in bleak times, I begin with chaotic, thick applications of dark acrylic. The subsequent layers of oil modulate and manipulate the initial dark passages into a dynamic interplay of electric greens and blues representing earth and a warm haze lighting the distance to represent a hopeful future.
I often don't depict any man-made elements within my work. I like the abstract, fractal concept of ambiguous terrain to have the viewer determine scale.
Here, however, I felt the inclusion of a Hebridean cottage in the middle ground was a necessary reference to our comparative insignificance to Mother Earth.
