BACKGROUND TO THE SHOW
The only way to depict light within a painting is to describe the corresponding shadow. One of my favourite quotes of any artist is Matisse when he said, ‘I don’t paint things I paint the difference between things’.
In February this year my mum passed away. Her middle name was Hope, my daughter’s middle name is Hope. I try to describe colour, light, energy, dynamism, joy, Hope, honesty and integrity in my paintings. What I recently realised is that for 25 years, I’ve been trying to convey the spirit of my mum.
Once someone is gone, we’re only left with their spirit; their memory and influence that they leave. It’s no longer material. What I hope to do with this exhibition is materialise the spirit of my mum - Lorna Hope Naismith.
