'INSTINCT'

Over the years I have developed an instinct for balance, colour, spacial counterweight, light and contrast. The final work should have an instant aesthetic brought about by the viewer’s instinct for visual beauty. I often contemplate whether there might be an underlying, universal human instinct for visual harmony, akin to music.

Paralysis by Analysis

We tap into a different part of our consciousness when we act on instinct. Some might call it unconscious, however I like to think of it as beyond consciousness or heightened consciousness. By distracting myself in philosophical discussion or music in the studio, I try to switch off from over thinking every aspect of painting. By doing this I can remove my self consciousness as a barrier to creation. All the work at the exhibition is painted without preliminary drawing and minimal planning which heightens the utilisation of instinct.
